October First?

What happened to September? The weeks are flying by and we are in the home stretch of the season. Our labor demands are less, as we are not weeding anymore, and not planting anymore. Just clean-up and harvesting remain on the agenda. Danica, our talented flower intern has motored West to her home in Washington State.
Jim, our rugged field intern has also departed back to Wisconsin.
Laura, our third outstanding intern remains working in our Portland Farmstand: She harvests and gathers in the early morning, and sets up the store. (She doesn't always dress like this photo; this was from her sister's wedding which was at the farm in June.)
As with everyone else, she has become self-directed, confident, and well informed about the workings of the farm. "Thank you," to all three of our interns this year. They did not work hourly or by "piece rate"; they lived here and ate what they grew, and lived an approximation of the farm-owner's life. One which demands flexibility, and sacrifice in exchange for meaningful work, and an impossibly broad skill set.
